How big is your Carbon Footprint?
-The average footprint for people in Canada is 16 tonnes
-The average for industrial nations is 11 tonnes
-The average world wide carbon footprint is 4 tonnes
-The world wide target to combat climate change is 2 tonnes
- How big is a cubic ton of carbon-dioxide? A cubic ton would be 27x27x27 feet or 8.3x8.3x 8.3 meters
How can you reduce your carbon footprint?
-
Reduce your dependency on driving your car.
Walk, use public transit, car pool.
One gallon of gas contains 6 pounds of carbon. When One gallon of gas is burned it
produces 5 pounds of carbon dioxide. A 20 gallon fuel tank will produce 100 pounds of Co2.
50 tanks of gas per year produces 5200 pounds of Co2 which equals 2.36 cubic tons of Co2
per each car each year.
-
Conserve electricity, water and gas.
Power stations produce 21% of the green house gases. It
takes electricity to run water treatment plants to feed our water needs, which in turns
contributes to green house gases.
- Conserve, reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible
We need to secure a sustainable environment for future generations!

OUR ENVIRONMENT:
Global Warming and Our Environment
What is it? Why is it a big deal? What's the impact? How do we contribute? How can we stop it? What's a carbon footprint? What are green
house gases?
So many questions to be answered.
- Global warming is the result of gases being trapped in the atmosphere which holds in heat and increases global temperatures (green house
gases)
- Green house gases consist mainly of 72% Carbon Dioxide, 15% Methane & 13% Nitrous Oxide
- The highest contributors to Green House gas emissions are as follows:
Power Stations = 21%
Industry = 16.8%
Transportation = 14%
Residential = 10%
- 60% of all Green House gases are emitted by these 4 Sectors
- Polar ice caps are melting at an alarming rate, causing rises in water levels, erosion, changes in weather patterns, creating more
unpredictable storms
- We contribute by producing carbon-dioxide emissions. Our contribution to green house gases is measure by our "Carbon Footprint"
- A carbon footprint is a measurement of how we individually and corporately contribute to green house gases. It is measured in cubic tons of
carbon-dioxide that we produce per year.
- The only way we can slow down or stop global warming is to
REUCE OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT!
